Right now, at the time of this writing, early November, it sounds strange, it's true. But we're not about the river floating per se, but we'll talk about what it might look like in a paddling equipment rental shop.
When renting equipment it can look simple, one boat, two barrels, two paddles, two vests. But if, in the season, on a weekend, 30 groups come to the rental shop with an average of five boats, then the human organizational ability to get 200 people out in an hour is not going to be enough. And what would that look like with RFID? Imagine a customer reading their contract number at the entrance to the rental area. His mates choose what is theirs and what suits them. At the end, they just walk through a gate that verifies all the equipment they have rented. Either the green light comes on that they have borrowed what they were supposed to, or the red light comes on and one person in the dispensing area checks
to see where the mistake occurred.
The RFID-enabled boat rental will serve more customers with fewer staff, increasing the speed of dispatch during peak times on weekends and holidays. As a side benefit, when returning equipment, it will be certain which customer has lost and which has found the equipment. In short, a fair approach.
