Czech Fishermen's Association - fishing permits

CODEWARE was approached by the Czech Fishing Association with a request for an expert assessment of the quality of the barcode on the CRS fishing permits for 2020. It was necessary to focus on the technical design of the barcodes and their legibility. The reason for the assessment was repeated complaints about the inability to read the codes.

Our tasks were as follows:

  • testing the barcodes on the permits
  • recommending the best technology/equipment for reading them
  • subsequent checking of the barcode against the standard

The CRS issues several types of fish permits with different validity ranges and in different colours. The labels are printed on a laser printer in sheets, each individual sheet consisting of 4 columns of 5 rows. The labels bear anti-counterfeiting security features.

Until now, a paper substrate has been used for printing, where a CODE128-type barcode is printed in a specified white field. This type of material, although one of the more affordable, is not the most suitable solution for permits as they are used year-round and need to be read by barcode readers from the beginning to the end of the season (issue and return of permits, RS checks, processing of statistics).

Permits with security features are subject to high environmental requirements (staying on the water, handling the permit to record attendance and catch, RS checks).

Recommendation:

  • Permits should be of PE material - plastic labels (polyethylene) are suitable for more demanding environments where the emphasis is on increasedThis material is more suitable for everyday use and is resistant to moisture or spillage. Resin tapes are used for printing on PE labels, which are resistant to harsh outdoor conditions.
  • After extended testing, we recommended switching to the latest type of reading device for its greater accuracy and more stable reading. The CipherLab 1504P scanner uses the latest reading technology to read codes, and is capable of reading even degraded barcodes with an error rate of around 20%.

Within the 11. International Fishing Fair For Fishing, a conference was held by the Czech Fishingm federation, to which we were invited and we were able to present our joint solution to the representatives of individual federations.

We are glad that everything turned out well and our company has concluded cooperation with the Czech Fishing Association, and thus with the individual associations, and the recommended readers will be used throughout the country.
